Driving day from Grand Canyon to an RV park between Arizona and Albuquerque, New Mexico. We drove through the park along the Coconino National Forest. Every few miles, we stopped. There were Navajo peoples’ booths with art for sale. The booths were open-air tents or little shacks. Usually the radio was playing softly. In one of the first booths, a four year old boy would wave enthusiastically for a few moments at us, then stop and stare at us. We bought sand art, some jewelry with juniper beads, and horse hair pottery (the hair is singed onto the ceramic).
On the way, we stopped by Geronimo and Painted Desert Indian Center. My mom had seen billboards so we went off the exit. These were gift shops. Lots of petrified wood, mocassins, and cowboy hats. For some reason, all the gift shops had white wood teepees on the outside - the inside was littered with trash and graffiti. My mom wanted to go to the Petrified Forest National Park, but it was closed so I cooked potatoes in the middle of the parking lot. We ate at a subway. Arrived at a very patriotic USA RV park.
